Science and Conservation:

Understand to Protect

The Science and Conservation team stands at the core of Por El Mar’s mission, underpinning our commitment to safeguard vulnerable marine ecosystems that are crucial for the planet’s health. Our guiding principle, “Conocer para proteger” (Understand to Protect), drives our efforts to deploy scientific knowledge in creating effective conservation strategies. This approach not only aims to restore the marine environment but also to democratise the knowledge gathered, making it accessible to all segments of society. Through science, we want to show and explain to the world what we see underwater.

The oceans, covering over 70% of the planet, are fundamental to global ecology, influencing climate regulation and supporting a diverse range of life forms. Despite their importance, these ecosystems are underexplored and often underrepresented in environmental policymaking. Through expeditions, scientific research, and collaborations with other NGOs, the Science and Conservation team is dedicated to filling these knowledge gaps, using detailed research to highlight the crucial role marine environments play in sustaining life on Earth.
